Seana Mheallan West 10th July 2012

The pitter patter of light rain woke us this morning. It was overcast, with low cloud capping the higher mountains. The forecast was for this to break up during the course of the day. Iain had alrady left the campsite to explore some of the scrambling in the area. Having liked yesterday so much at Seana Mheallan West me and Vicks decided to return.

This time we took a different approach. Leaving the Torridon campsite (905 558) walk south along the A896 to where a bridge (902 550) crosses the river Abhain Thrail. Turn left after crossing the bridge and follow the 4x4 track east and then southeast passing a house on the way, eventually you will come to the remains of an old foot bridge (914 542).

On the opposite side of the river is a huge obvious boulder. Cross here and take a bearing of 70 degrees, walk gradually up hill and the Seana Mheallan West crag (921 547) will come into view. A much easier walk in than the previous day, around 45 minutes.

Upon arrival at the crag things were wet, but ever the optomists we geared up in the hope that the weather forecasts were going to be right. Our intentions were to do the climbs on the Quartz Slab and Bedrock Buttress. Things started well and we manged to get three climbs done on the Quartz Slab before the cloud came down and the rain started.

Remaining upbeat we continued to climb and got a further two climbs done. By this time the mist had thickened further, the rain got heavier and we were both totally soaked.

We packed up and laden with soaked heavy climbing gear we decided to explore the hillside on our return to the campsite where we would soon be meeting another friend, Mary.

Further tom foolery, needed roping up for this boulder problem! 10/07/2012 (Photo: A J Thorley)

On the way down we came across many short walls and large boulders, which if you took time to link them altogether would give a good days bouldering. Something I may well do the next time I'm in Torridon.
